Before Returning

Thanks for taking a roundabout
bike trip and stopping by with wine
glasses securely tucked into
your guitar case and padded in bubble wrap.

I liked your orangey, velour shirt
and how you poked my panty-hosed calves.
Hearing you strum your latest flamenco melodies
made me wonder if you make love this way--
With heavy lids and deep breath.

I was a little embarrassed when you noticed
the neatly folded squares
of hand towels on my shelf. You said you heard
that a person keeps their living space in the same
way they take care of their body.

I wasn't surprised that you showed me
her picture. I was surprised she was blonde and tried to
picture the two of you having breakfast. Tried to imagine
that day you said you were leaving.

That night at my door I needed
to hold you for a few, long
minutes, before returning
to my room unanchored.

Neolttwigi
Slamming her small feet down pushing the wooden
plank to earth, she thrusts her cousin up
skyward. A yellow linen skirt billows,
black plaits bounce, smooth faces flush.

Two pairs of dark eyes
peek, in turn, outside
the family
yard.
